Providing drinking water to villages
Tiako-i-Madagasikara Suisse et France Voisine (TIM-SFV) is a Swiss association registered with the "Maison des Associations" in Geneva. TIM-SFV belongs to the Solidarit'eau network; which operates under the aegis of the Swiss DDC (Department of Development and Cooperation). Its goal is to promote and support cultural, social and economic development projects in Madagascar.
Approximately 600 sites containing seriously polluted water have been selected in collaboration with the Madagascan Ministry of Health. TIM-SFV raises the funds needed to supply these remote villages with portable and easy-to-use Watalys equipment, which produces a chlorinated solution for water purification locally and at a reduced cost. Powered by a car battery or solar panel, the equipment can produce one litre of chlorinated solution per hour, which is enough to purify up to 4,000 litres of drinking water. The programme also includes training the local population so that they can become independent and autonomous agents.
The project started in 2008. The Addax Foundation funded the water purification programme in 16 villages in the Alaotra-Mangoro and Betsiboka regions. In 2010, the Foundation renewed the partnership with TIM-SFV to expand its activities to 15 additional villages in the Alaotra-Mangoro region. To address the following key issues, the objectives remain the same:
- purchase of the Watalys kits to produce the chlorinated solution;
- training of local personnel to enable procedure use;
- distribution of Watalys kits in medical centres;
- presentation of the new system to the inhabitants of the 16 villages;
- distribution of the chlorinated solution to the community via the medical centres.
The anticipated results are:
- assurance that drinking water will be available in remote villages;
- a 30% reduction in waterborne diseases;
- a 50% reduction in nosocomial infections related to water quality.
