Improving education in rural areas
The "Early Childhood Education" project in Morocco consists of developing an early childhood educational network through the recruitment and training of young pre-school educators and the training of experienced teachers in the management of documentation centres and library administration.
The overall objective in the medium and long term is to improve the living conditions of local populations and to foster economic, social and human development locally by:
- fighting illiteracy;
- developing a teaching contingent in rural areas;
- opening up local opportunities for the future for young professionals who currently emigrate to escape unemployment.
The project was initiated by a group of 80 local associations in the Ouarzazate region and coordinated by the Pays de Loire region’s (France) "Groupement des Retraités Educateurs sans Frontières" (GREF), an organisation composed of retired volunteer professionals. It is brought together under the umbrella of the Moroccan association "Education and Solidarity in the High Atlas Region". The goal is to generate sustainable growth supported by the local populations.
The Addax Foundation supports GREF in financing:
- the creation of kindergarten schools;
- the training of early childhood teachers to lead educational initiatives within nurseries;
- the setting up of libraries, documentation centres and multipurpose classes;
- the training of teachers and facilitators to manage such libraries / documentation centres;
- the necessary resources needed for newly-trained educators to continue their professional development independently and transfer their knowledge and skills to other professionals in the region.
At the outset of the project, GREF sets up a monitoring procedure and a grid for evaluating the effectiveness of the resources put in place through interviews, an impact analysis on the local level and discussions with national authorities (Ministry of Education) and associations of the Ouarzazate province.
