Treating the noma disease

"La Maison de Fati" provides a site to host children and adults affected by the noma disease and going through pre and post-operative treatments. On one hand it enables patients to be treated (physiotherapy, re-education and convalescence) and laboratory tests to be conducted, and on the other, the medical teams (nurses, surgeons, physiotherapists, etc.) benefit from a place to store their equipment.

The noma disease:

  • is a direct consequence of malnutrition and lack of hygiene;
  • acts ruthlessly amongst the poorest families;
  • mainly affects children from 0 to 6 years old;
  • is lethal for 80% of the children when it is not cured;
  • inflicts intolerable facial mutilations to its survivors, which often lead them to being rejected by their family and society.

"La Maison de Fati" is an NGO created in 2007. Its name is in memory of the first little girl, Fati, operated of the consequences of the noma disease. "La Maison de Fati" supports the surgical missions organized by a French NGO entitled "Enfants du Noma" (the children of noma). Teams of voluntary European surgeons have been carrying out several surgical missions a year to Burkina Faso since 2001.

The mission of "La Maison de Fati" is to recruit personnel, cure sick children, ensure their nutrition and provide all the pre-operational exams and post-operational treatments required for their recovery. When maxillofacial and heavy orthopaedic operations are carried out, re-education and prosthesis are entirely covered. "La Maison de Fati" supports surgical missions, stores the medical equipment and necessary medicine, and carries out awareness and prevention campaigns for the noma disease in the region. Furthermore, it organises training sessions for local medical personnel and sanitary and social education in neighbouring villages. "La Maison de Fati" also established an aid network between several actors involved in treating people suffering of the noma disease in Burkina Faso.

Until today, "La Maison de Fati" has been set up in temporary and limited premises. Addax Foundation's support is contributing to funding the construction of a sustainable building, offering a larger capacity (1200 sq m), able to host more than 400 children per year and welcome their families when necessary.

The short and mid-term objectives are:

  • to continue covering the maxillofacial and orthopaedic missions;
  • to create a dental surgery in the centre;
  • to establish an ophthalmologic and urologic mission.
