Fighting maternal and infant mortality

Mercy Ships is a global charity which serves the poorest in the developing world. It deploys hospital ships, crewed by volunteers, to increase the capacity of each host nation to serve the direct need of local populations. The regional programme strategy aims to address the need for sustainable health care access.

In collaboration with qualified local and international partners, Mercy Ships provides curative surgical interventions and community-based preventive health strategies. Working with health authorities, Mercy Ships builds capacity and provides sustainable development of local medical personnel and facilities.

The Mercy Ships projects include two missions in Sierra Leone:

  1. "Obstetric Fistula Program"
Sierra Leone has the highest documented incidence of maternal mortality in the world. The occurrence of death is closely related to the rate of childbirth injuries. The Aberdeen & West Africa Fistula Centre (AWAFC) works to provide local healthcare and capacity by training African and international doctors and nurses in the prevention and treatment of fistulas.
The main goal of this project is to increase the quality of life for women in West Africa with debilitating childbirth injuries through specialised surgical interventions and holistic care.
  2. "Outpatient Clinic for Children"
Child mortality rate in Sierra Leone is the highest in the world. Under the auspices of the Aberdeen West African Fistula Centre, Mercy Ships opened an outpatient (ambulatory care) clinic for children 12 years old and under. Its mission is to serve as a primary care facility by providing initial diagnosis and basic medical care.
The main goal of this project is to reduce childhood mortality by providing basic healthcare to children through diagnosis, medical treatment, immunisations and community health education.

Through its support to both Mercy Ships clinics, the Addax Foundation contributes to build capacity and provide sustainable development of local medical personnel and facilities in Sierra Leone. It also aims to give unprivileged women and children a chance to have access to healthcare and surgical treatments that can change their life.
