Self-sufficiency of an orphanage

This project supports the Anwiankwanta village's orphanage in the Ashanti region of Ghana. The orphanage welcomes approximately 80 children and their caretakers. Due to the increasing number of orphans, it lacks room for accommodation. In order to expand its current capacity and ensure decent living conditions for these children, two additional family units have been built and a sanitary infrastructure programme is underway. Each new house can accommodate 12 children and a caretaker in accordance with local legislation. Future plans also include the setting up of an agricultural and environmental programme to create an income generating activity for the orphanage.

The project is run by Save our Lives - Ghana (SOL-GH), a non-governmental organisation established in 2001 in Ghana. SOL-GH aims to provide a stable environment and a sense of home to the orphans. The children are fed, sheltered, educated and loved, thus enabling them to grow up safely and have access to a brighter future.

The orphanage was founded in 1993 when hospital matron Paulina Opei decided to look after a newborn baby, whose mother had died during delivery in the village. Since then, she has taken care of many other orphans. With the help of her sister Beatrice and of other volunteers, and thanks to private donations, Paulina has been able to support more than 200 children to date. Since 2004, an employee of Addax Petroleum and his family have been supporting the orphanage. In 2008, the Addax Foundation committed to expanding the orphanage's accommodation capacity and ensuring its self-sufficiency in the long run.

The project is developed jointly with a Swiss NGO, IRHA (International Rainwater Harvesting Alliance), which installs sanitation facilities based on a rainwater harvesting process. This aspect of the project is implemented both in the orphanage and in the village school. Furthermore, with the support of villagers, an environmental awareness programme including hygiene and water preservation is implemented among the local community. Lastly, a programme aimed at planting fruit trees in the orphanage and the school is being run with the children's collaboration.
