Rainwater to battle water shortage
International Rainwater Harvesting Alliance (IRHA) is a non-profit association established in Switzerland in November 2002. IRHA's vision is to use rainwater in a variety of ways and its mission is to promote rainwater harvesting as a tool for climate change adaptation and as a water resource which should be viewed in the framework of the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).
The "Rainwater, Source of Wellbeing and Sustainable Development for Children: Blue School, Ghana" project takes place in the SOL-GH orphanage and in the primary school in Anwiankwanta village. The project covers diverse and complementary goals:
- Contribute to the design and creation of ecological facilities in the orphanage
- Organise a forestation programme in the orphanage ("A child, a tree" initiative)
- Build rainwater harvesting systems and introduce appropriate sanitation facilities in the primary school
- Plant both a vegetable garden and orchard in the primary school to improve the premise's environmental conditions and children's nutrition. Forestation activities will also take place in the village, through the plantation of shadow and fruit trees adapted to the local climate
- Build a volleyball pitch in the school to develop sport activities and thereby reinforce the social integration and development of young girls through sport
A Parents-Authorities-Children-Teachers (PACT) committee is formed to increase awareness on:
- hygiene and health;
- plantation and garden maintenance;
- environmental protection;
- peace and tolerance.
Through its support to IRHA, the Addax Foundation contributes to the project's goals, in both the orphanage and the school, by:
- improving access to water and sanitation;
- improving environmental conditions and children's nutrition;
- reinforcing the local population's social capacity to cope with water shortage and training them on the use of the new water collection facilities.
