An oasis for the slum children

Founded in 1996, the Gentiana Primary School is a private non-profit institution that is independent of religious and political affiliations. The school is an oasis situated at the heart of the Kabiria slum on the periphery of Nairobi along the dirty beaten earth road in a semi-urban environment. It is not only child-friendly but also a second home for some of the pupils and a first home for most of them who have nowhere to call home.

The school admits children of the poorest slum residents, AIDS orphans and children with learning disabilities, in other words those who hardly have a chance at regular schools whether private or public. It runs a specific programme aiming to improve their academic level and allow them to compare with children from regular schools.

The Gentiana Primary School has created a comprehensive counselling programme alongside the regular school curriculum, where topics related to environmental and sexual education, HIV/AIDS, family planning, life skills (such as activities of daily living like good grooming and proper study skills) are taught in addition to the classic academic disciplines. In order to nurture talent and offer diverse knowledge to their students, the school has put in place music, drama, journalism and environmental clubs.

For five years, the Addax Foundation will facilitate the schooling of 39 students (boys and girls) voluntarily involved in the Gentiana Primary School environmental club. This funding covers their tuition and fees, clothing, school supplies and the equipment devoted to environmental projects. This is also a way for the Foundation to support the school's environmental and social education programme amongst young individuals and slum inhabitants, through different projects, such as tree planting, preservation recycling and cleaning up polluted rivulets.
