Community strengthening to prevent child migration

The "Management of community fields in Burkina Faso" project aims to provide 5 remote villages in Burkina Faso with the means to carry out subsistence farming and therefore support their families, and especially their children. The project is part of a program held in West Africa, which focuses both on social, educational and professional integration of the younger generation, and strong community building. The objective is to give families the opportunity to raise their children, rather than sending them away to look for work elsewhere.

Each community is awarded a 5,000 sq m field, which is harnessed by approximately twenty families. They are trained on how to improve the production of crops sustainably whilst preserving the environment. Moreover, the fields are directly managed by committees to ensure a fair distribution of resources (tools and crops). These committees are supported and monitored during two years so as to ensure the project's sustainability.

Created in 1932 in Switzerland, the Fondation Suisse du Service Social International (SSI) is an NGO and an active member of an international network of social workers. It supports children and families facing social and legal issues in a transnational context.

The Addax Foundation finances the following activities:

  • schooling for children;
  • training of youth in agriculture;
  • demonstrating methods to increase crop productivity;
  • supplying agricultural tools and accounting material;
  • introducing a micro-credit system;
  • creating managing committees held by women;
  • holding campaigns to raise awareness on the risks incurred by child migration.
